Building a website or app with AI in 2026: when to do it yourself, and when to hire an agency
In 2026, a small business owner can describe a project to Lovable, Bolt or Wix in the morning and demo a working app by the afternoon. Building a website with AI is no longer a conference-stage promise. It works, and we use these tools every day at Fenxi. So the question is fair: why would you still pay an agency?
We’d rather answer it straight, even when the answer is « you don’t need one ».
In short: AI is enough for a brochure site, a landing page or a prototype. Once your project takes payments, stores sensitive data or connects to your tools (ERP, CRM), work with an agency, or at least have what the AI built audited.
Building a website with AI: you can do a lot on your own
For a small brochure site, a landing page to test an offer or a prototype to show your team, AI tools are often enough. They give you a clean design, working code and hosting in a few clicks. If your site doesn’t handle payments, customer accounts or sensitive data, build it yourself. You’ll save money, as long as you can set aside some time.
A prototype is useful for another reason too. When a client shows up with a mockup they generated in an hour, we save a week of back-and-forth, because we’re discussing a real screen instead of an idea.
From demo to production is where the real work starts
Problems show up as soon as the app touches real data or real users. AI writes code that works for the expected case and handles the unexpected ones badly. In 2025, Veracode tested more than 100 models on 80 coding tasks: 45% of the generated code had a security flaw, and defenses against XSS attacks failed 86% of the time. This isn’t hypothetical. The same year, a vulnerability (CVE-2025-48757) exposed data in about 10% of the 1,645 Lovable apps a researcher scanned.
Other issues never show up in a demo:
- integrations with the tools you already use (ERP, CRM, payments, accounting);
- GDPR compliance and where your data is hosted;
- maintenance: updates, fixes, and the feature someone will ask for in six months;
- performance once your user base grows.
For PCB Electronics, we built a custom ERP connected to their order processing, and order handling time dropped by 75%. The interface wasn’t the hard part. The work was understanding their business and making sure the data was reliable.
Your time has a price too
Doing it yourself with AI doesn’t mean doing it without effort. You have to write the right prompts, compare versions, fix bugs, pick a host, connect your domain and test everything on mobile. For a business owner who is new to this, the back-and-forth quickly eats up whole evenings, and that time no longer goes into running the business.
UX/UI takes even longer. A website that displays correctly doesn’t necessarily convert: the visitor’s path, the order of information and the placement of buttons decide whether people contact you or leave. AI gives you a generic layout without knowing your customers or their hesitations. If you’re not used to these trade-offs, each one can take days.
A client recently asked us whether their website was really worth the price, now that AI can generate pages in an hour. They had received the equivalent of eight days of custom development, real UX/UI work and a CMS that went beyond the original brief. Above all, they didn’t have to manage the technical choices, the testing or the launch. The site was delivered ready to use, on a codebase clean enough for someone on their team to take over later.
With a tool, the project stays on your plate. With an agency that supports you, the agency carries it.
A website nobody finds doesn’t bring you anything
A generator gives you a website, but it won’t bring you a single visitor. And search is changing fast: according to Ahrefs, when Google shows an AI Overview, the top result loses about 35% of its clicks. Your customers also ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, and those tools only cite sources they can understand.
Showing up in those answers takes specific work called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): structured content, clean technical data, and pages that answer your customers’ questions precisely. It adds to classic SEO rather than replacing it. For example, SEO work put Ping Pang Paris’s online store in first position on Google for its main search queries. No generator does it for you, and it often decides whether a website brings in customers.
AI writes the code, it doesn’t make your decisions
Code is getting cheaper to produce, which is good news for our clients too. Decisions are still expensive: which feature to build first, which one to drop, which architecture will save you from rebuilding everything in two years. An AI tool follows your instructions to the letter. It will never tell you your request is a bad idea.
Then there’s accountability. When a payment fails on a Friday night, someone has to figure out why and fix it. If you generated the app yourself, that someone is you.
To be honest about our own industry: agencies that only assemble pages will disappear, because AI does that work faster and cheaper. The ones that stay useful combine AI with scoping, engineering and long-term support. At Fenxi, AI speeds up our development and lowers costs for our clients, but our engineers make the calls and answer for the result.
Do you need an agency for your project? Our checklist
| Your project | On your own with AI | With an agency |
|---|---|---|
| Brochure site with a few pages | Yes | If search visibility matters for sales |
| Prototype or market test | Yes | To scope the next version |
| Online store with payments | Fine at launch | Once your revenue depends on it |
| App with customer accounts or sensitive data | Risky | Yes |
| Tool connected to your ERP, CRM or IT systems | No | Yes |
| Platform you expect to grow | For the very first version | For everything after |
| You don’t have time to manage the project | Not recommended | Yes |
A simple rule: if an outage or a data leak would cost you customers, have professionals build it, or at least audit it.
Start with AI, hand over at the right time
AI has lowered the cost of getting started, and that’s a good thing. Use it to test an idea, show a project or convince a partner. When your website or app needs to take payments, protect data or connect to your tools, talk to a team that answers for it.
Fenxi Studio designs and builds websites, web apps and mobile apps, with SEO and GEO built in from day one. Already have an AI-generated prototype? Show it to us and we’ll tell you which parts to keep and which to rebuild.
